On the Cover
The Criel Mound is an Adena conical burial mound located in South Charleston, West Virginia. The top of the mound was removed around 1840 to erect a judges’ stand for horse races that were held on a racetrack constructed at the base. It is one of the few remaining mounds that were errected in the Kanawha Valley during the Woodland period. It was originally 33 feet in height and 173 feet in diameter at the base.
