On Wednesday, April 29, 2015, I could not wait to get off of work
and go hunt my favorite creek. During the day I had kept telling my
boss, David Farris, (also a dedicated collector) that I was going to
have an adventure that afternoon. The clock hit 2:30 p.m. and I was
out of there! At this point in time, I had only been hunting for three
years, and the excitement of finding something was high in my blood.
The hunt started, and I had only walked up the creek about one-half
mile when luck struck. I picked up a fine Big Slough. I quickly discovered
it was just the base, but it was still big – 3” x 1 5/8”.
It was semitranslucent with fossil inclusions. This was a true “heartbreaker” if
there ever was one, and I thought wouldn’t it be nice if I
found the other half.
Almost exactly five years later, on Feb. 8, 2020, the family was
going to celebrate my grandpa’s birthday. I knew I would have
to hunt quickly so I wouldn’t miss the festivities. Fortunately,
we had just had two days of rain, so I figured my odds of finding
something were high. I headed out at dawn to the same creek, feeling
confident.
