On the Cover
This banded slate birdstone with a chunky body, upturned tail and long angling
neck was found by a grave digger at the Union City cemetery in Darke County, Ohio. It was
found prior to 1964 along with a small slate tapered tubular pipe and measures 3 1/2 inches
in length, 2 inches in height. It was formerly collected by Harold Buckingham, John Davidson
and Earl Mumaw of Versailles, Ohio. Several nicks on the tail were polished over by the
ancient maker. The head which features an illusory eye, leans slightly to the left. It was cataloged
by Earl Townsend, Jr. of Indianapolis, Indiana as T5001. It was previously shown in
“Who’s who No.3”, page 48; No.5 page 20 and “American Indian Artifacts”, page 97. |
