large modified rock

Figure 1. This large modified rock weighs 15 lbs. There is a groove down the center, the purpose of which, is known. It was found in Mercer County, Illinois, and previously collected by Floyd Goddard and Bruce Filbrandt.

OCC artifact

Figure 5. A look alike OCC artifact featuring wrought worked (hammered) copper originally cast by a Midwest farmer in the 1800s. Note the round bubbles / defects in the metal so typical of a crude, casting process. Authentic OCC artifacts were seldom, if ever, cast by OCC craftsmen. The patina in this specimen is dark brown and well fixed to the metal surface indicating substantial age and exposure to the elements. This is also seen with many authentic OCC artifacts.
