The two points found on the May 26, 2013 hunt.

May 5th, 2018 was the 144th running of the
Kentucky Derby, otherwise known as the most exciting
two minutes in sports. This just also happened to be the
most exciting day of artifact hunting in my lifetime.
Creek walking for artifacts has not been very
productive for me. In fact, the only artifact I had found
to date walking creeks was an Archaic period Kirk point
found on Friday, April 18, 2008, that I had “stumbled
upon” while mushroom hunting. This had been a very
productive day, having found over 100 morel mushrooms
and the Kirk point. Actually, I had submitted that
article which was printed in the July 2008 issue of the
Central States Archaeological Journal under the title “
A Good Days Hunt.”
Fast forward to May 5, 2018, ten years later. I
had free a nice and sunny Saturday morning in southern
Illinois. I did want to be back in the afternoon to watch
the “Cardinals-versus-Cubs” game on TV followed by
the Kentucky Derby. So I left the house mid-morning
to walk a new creek that I had not looked in before.
Four miles from the house, I realized that I only
had the tennis shoes that I was wearing, having
forgotten my hip boots. Driving back home, I had
thought this might be an omen for another fruitless walk
in the creek.
