(Selected Pictures from the October Journal)
On the Cover
Pictured on the cover are two Hopewell curved base style pipes. They are
both made of a spotted olive green pipestone and have been highly polished.
They were found together many years ago in Shawneetown, Kentucky, which
is about 180 miles from the main sphere of the Hopewell in Newark, Ohio.
The pipe at the top is 4 ¾ inches long and pipe at the bottom is
5 ¼ inches long. They are so similar in manufacture that there is
a high probability they were made by the same craftsman. Interestingly,
there is another case of a pair of this style pipe being found together.
The pipe pictured at top was damaged, and was repaired in ancient times.
This repair, and how it worked, can be seen below in the black and white
pictures. The pipe at the bottom has multiple tally marks in front of and
behind the bowl on both sides. Chalmer Lynch of Evansville, Indiana formerly
collected both pipes and referred to them in print as "his best relics." The
picture below shows him sitting at his desk with the two pipes (arrow) and
other artifacts in front of him. Collection of Len and Janie Weidner, Westerville,
