On the Cover
This rare fenestrated (cut-out) Mississippian shell gorget, is engraved on the
outside of the shell and retains much of its original luster. The color is unusual as it was preserved
by its locus, that of a rock shelter near Speedwell, Tennessee. It was found in 1986 by
a 13 year old boy exploring an area near his home. The design is Early Etowah with similar
types shown by Moorhead. It featues two mature Turkey cocks on either side of a striped pole,
and standing on a cross member. Each Turkey is in the act of preening their feathers, a daily
routine among fowl. It was originally acquired from the finder by John F. Berner.
