On the Cover
Pioneer Florida underwater archaeologist Ben Waller dubbed this point the "Mona Lisa of Newnans" for
its exquisite flaking and the beauty of the red, translucent coral material, best viewed with light projected from
the back. This point is known as Big Red and was found by Carlos Taum in Hillsborough County Florida. It is shown
actual size and has the classic bell shape of the Newnan point. The Newnan type is a Middle Archaic artifact and
dates to approximately 5,400 BP. This point was chosen by the Florida society to represent Florida on our cover. |
