This spectacular 3/4 Grooved Axe was foundin Pettis County, Missouri sometime prior to 1916, when Edward Payne acquired it. B.W. Stephen became its next owner in 1935, aquiring it from the Payne Collection. From the Stephens collection the axe next went to Tommy Webster. The axe was acquired from the Webster collection in 1984 by Don E. Lweis. This axe weighs 13 poinds, and is 12 /12/ inches ling, 4 3/4 inches wide and 3 inches thick. This axe was chosen to represent the State of Missouri on our cover. Photo by Tony Clinton.
