On the Cover
Medicine tube, or tubular pipe, found by Lonnie McMichen on January
6, 1977, at an Indian campsite on Pumpkinvine Creek in Paulding County,
near Dallas, Georgia. It is 7 inches long and made of greenstone. The
site is estimated to date to the Late Archaic- Early Woodland era,
approximately 3000 years ago. The tube was found in an area containing
several fire pits, but none of the others exposed any artifacts. When
Mc McMichen first saw a piece of the tube he thought it was an axe,
but after taking it to the creek and cleaning it of he was excited
to realize he had found something he had only dreamed of. He identified
it as a medicine tube from the book "Sun Circles and Human Hands."
Found with the medicine tube were a large deer antler, a digging stone,
a large white flint knife, and a small gorget. From the collection
of Lonnie McMichen and son, Dr. John W. McMichen.
