On the Cover
Hook type bannerstone found by Howard Lutz in Spencer County, Indiana,
on April 20, 1977. It is 3 3/4 inches long. This rate Late Archaic
bannerstone type has mostly been recovered on the Indiana side of the
Ohio River from approximately Evansville, Indiana to Louisville, Kentucky.
Of the 15 specimens known, 12 have been found in southern Indiana.
This particular specimen was found together with two others, another
hook type and an hourglass type, as the Ohio River was receding from
flood stage. All three were ceremonially killed and have been restored.
This bannerstone was chosen to represent Indiana artifacts. Submitted
