Three-quarter grooved green-gray quartzite axe. Mark Frantz found this
axe at Lake Odessa, Louisa County, Iowa, while fishing. He saw the
bit protruding from tree roots when the lake was at low water level.
It weighs 11 pounds, 10 1/2 ounces. It is 11 1/4 inches long. It is
unblemished and is the largest quartzite axe known from Iowa. It was
chosen to represent Iowa artifacts by the officers of the Hawkeye State
Archaeological Society of Iowa. Collection of Bruce Filbrandt. Blue
