On the Cover
The blade on the front cover was chosen to represent the Wolverine State
Archaeological Society of Michigan. It is a Late Middle Woodland Hopewell
ceremonial blade. It is 8 7/8 inches long and 3 inches wide at the
widest part. It is dark blue/black and is probably made of Upper Mercer
chert or Coshocton chert from Ohio quarries. It is a personal find
of Norman Grogitsky and was found in 1937 on the Gibralter Site in
Wayne County, Michigan. The site is about 30 miles south of Detroit,
near the mouth of the Detroit River, and it has been destroyed. On
the map under the blade, the blade tip is at the site location.
