Is a Clovis Always a Clovis?
. Point found at the Owl Creek Bridge on the Old Number 8 Highway near Gumbo, Missouri. The point measures 4” in length and is made from Burlington chert exhibiting heavy patination.

I have been hunting and collecting Indian artifacts for over 50 years and thought I was up to speed with the point types from my area. I always referred to Greg Perino’s three volumes of Selected Preforms, Points and Knives of the North American Indians to identify points.

Recently I heard of a Clovis point coming available (Fig. 1). It had two COA’s with it. One was from Calvin Howard dated 2002 , on which he declared it a Clovis. The second COA was from 2022 by Jerry Dickey where he described it as a Gainey Clovis.

I quickly looked in the Perino volumes and found no references to this type. I decided it was time to do my homework on this point, and turned to the internet for help. I soon discovered there were a number of articles on the Gainey fluted point type. The photos with the articles looked nearly identical to my point.
