This remarkable three-dimensional object made from copper was excavated by Henry Clyde Shertrone working for the Ohio Archaeological and Historical Society. It was found in the remains of a cremation burial located within Mound 13 at Mound City in 1920-21. It is currently on display at the Mound City Museum located at the Hopewell Culture National Historic Park in Chillicothe, Ohio. Note that it is still identified as a “bear.”

A steatite medicine tube that was prehistorically converted into a smoking pipe. The two small black triangles point to stem hole perforations on each end.
